Attention is a kind of generosity.

Where Attente comes from, what it believes, and how to reach us.

The name

“Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.”

Simone Weil, letter to Joë Bousquet, 1942

Attente is French for waiting: not the idle kind, but the patient, open attention Simone Weil wrote about in Attente de Dieu. To attend to something, she said, is to put yourself aside and look at it fully.

That is what a good reader gives a manuscript, and it is what we wanted software to give a writer: close attention to the work, and the wisdom to leave the writing to you.

What we believe

The hard, good part of writing is the writer's: the choosing of words, the hearing of a sentence, the slow finding of what a book is about. We built Attente to protect that part, and to help with everything around it.

What software can do is pay attention: to every name and date across four hundred pages, to the thread you dropped in chapter six, to the sentence that sags. Attente puts that attention in the margin, where an editor's pencil has always been, and leaves the page to you.

So the readers only suggest. Your manuscript stays on your computer, readable without us. It is never anyone's training data. And when you want quiet, one switch turns everything off.
