Questions and answers
The readers in the margin
What is Attente?
Attente is a writing app for novelists, short-story writers, screenwriters, academics and game writers. It has the structure a long piece of work needs (a binder, corkboard, outline, timeline and story bible) and readers in the margin that notice continuity slips, weak lines and loose threads.
Does the AI write for me?
No. The readers in the margin only suggest. A suggestion is shown as a tracked change with its reason, and your manuscript changes only when you accept it. Nothing is ever written into your work behind your back.
Can I turn the AI off?
Yes, and off means off. There's one switch for the whole app, one for each project and one for each reader. When the readers are off for a project, nothing from it is sent anywhere. Your existing notes stay readable, and you can dismiss them.
Which models do the readers use?
Your choice: Attente's hosted readers, your own API key for a supported provider (sent straight from your computer, never to us), or a model running on your own computer. A small model can run on the device; larger ones stay in the cloud.
Your writing and your privacy
Is my writing used to train AI?
Never. Your manuscript is not used to train or fine-tune any model, by Attente or by any provider it sends a reading to. Hosted readings go only to providers whose terms forbid training and keep nothing after the request.
Where is my manuscript stored? Does it work offline?
On your computer, as a real project folder you can see and back up. Everything except hosted readings works offline, and you can export any project as plain text or Markdown at any time, with no account.
Computers, files and forms
Which computers does it run on?
Attente runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and in the browser. On a phone, the web app gives the page the whole screen, with the margin in a sheet at the bottom. Native phone and tablet apps are planned.
Can I bring my work from Scrivener, Ulysses or Word?
Yes. Attente imports Scrivener projects, Ulysses exports, Word documents, Markdown, plain text and Fountain screenplays. Your originals are only read, never changed, and a summary shows what will come across before anything happens.
Is it good for screenplays, theses and games?
Yes. Screenplays are formatted as you type, with Fountain in and out. Theses get numbered headings, citations and a bibliography, with Zotero support. Games are written in Ink, seen as a branching graph, played through and exported.
Buying
How much does it cost?
Attente is $79 once, for every computer you write on, with 12 months of updates from 1.0 and your first month of Attente Plus included. The readers work with your own key or a model on your computer at no extra cost. After that month, Attente Plus, an add-on for licence holders at $9 a month or $90 a year, hosts them for you. Plain-text export is never behind a plan.
What if I need more readings than Plus includes?
Add extra readings any time: 2,500 for $5 or 10,000 for $15. They're used after the month's own, carry over from month to month and never expire. Or use your own key or a model on your computer, which costs nothing extra.
Is it finished?
Attente is in beta: complete enough to write a book in, and still changing. You can try everything free for 7 days, and a licence bought now includes 1.0.
Try Attente free for 7 days.
Download it for macOS, Windows or Linux, or open it in your browser. When it's earned its place, one licence covers every computer you write on.
